Old Dodge       ©2012 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       1st place, 217 points
1/30s, f2.8, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: A little of this, a little of that. Mostly just tone mapped for a nostalgia feel (and a little clone out of a cloth banner as well.)       Extra Info: It runs! (O.k., it runs if you push it.)

Great shot - and although I tend to be puristic, I like the PP very much. It gives the special touch to it.

I absolutely love the shot. It's the kind of shot that stirs the imagination and makes you ask questions like where was it taken, how long has it been there, how did it get that sadly beautiful rusted look. Congrats!

Thank you all again for your votes and comments.

doto Well I see you received far more top votes. Funny how the voting tallies in points. I really don't think this deserved first place. For quality of photography, I prefer my Main entry by far.

a.c71 You are very kind.

Bill I really think there were a few generations who lived through the most exciting of times. I think from 1975 on, a lot of the dazzle of air and space dulled a bit. Wish I'd been around to begin flying in the 40's and 50's. It was an exciting era.

PhillipW I come here for the comments and the critique. Thanks.

ambaker Come to Toronto; with all that winter salt on the roads there are lots of these around!!! ;-)

A classic and your PP made it even more special. Congratulations on your 1 & 4 place, (even better than 2 & 4 :)). It's an honour to come that close.

    Jade,
The f-86 came into its own in Korea in the 50's. I was certainly around then, as a boy whose imagination was captured by that plane.

Congratulations on the first place finish. Very well deserved. I'd love to find one of these near me. It would make a great rat rod.

Bill, I think you are old enough to have seen Vietnam in the sixties and young enough that the F-86 was something so new that it would capture the imagination of a young boy!

Thanks, Lo, Mepo, mrsawyer. My plane shots never do as well and yet they are invariably my favoured entries!

Thank you for all your votes and comments. Each one is appreciated.

This got my vote, but the F-86 got my heart. And by the way, how old do you think I am?? Now let's see what you Michael can cook up.

Sorry I didn't comment earlier - I absolutely loved this photo - it just shouts "old", and the almost monochrome colouring really brings it home. Congratulations on two great entries

Love the truck but he lighting is back to front imo. Now if you will just tell me where it is - I parked it a while back but could not remember where :-) Love the bricks and the rusty cab. I cropped it just behind the cab and like it a lot better. In my top 30 for sure.

Adirondack Gal It sure is! Don't tell Bill!

wrosenthal It "looks" ready to go but I don't think it has moved in quite a while.

I love the "feel" of this image. I'm sure this will finish well. (is that the truck's drive shaft under the rear of the truck? LOL)

I like old things that work, and this looks ready to go.

Old Finn Thanks. I really think the setting is a critical enhancement in shooting old vehicles. Most often, finding a "period" background can be a little problematic.

rafinmelb Definitely a challenge with the lighting. I figure another hour and the sun would have had everything in the shade but I didn't have an hour to kill. Certainly the sign and plants take away a little from the overall impact (and are annoying distractions as well.)

PhillipW Thanks. Maybe I'll post a lighter version in outtakes given so many commented on how dark the front end appeared.

Nicely composed. The background suits well to the old car.

Tough to balance the dark right with the bright left. The very bright floor areas probably need to be toned down a touch more. The truck and the wall are very well presented and complement each other well. Shame about a couple of modern touches (the sign and plants) behind the truck.

My favourite of all the automobile entries as the whole composition shouts old. Maybe a little dark bottom front of the Dodge but overall very well crafted. Good Luck.

Thanks FLDave. The bright corner was something I struggled with. I wasn't happy with the doorway in the background either. The best shot would have been straight on from the side, vehicle profile, brick wall, and brick road. Simple and clean. But some billionaire has his ego machine in high gear with a large display of his space shots scattered about the street each in a fancy display case one of which is just off frame to the left, which totally blocked any chance for the obvious more artistic shot!

I love this image, gritty yet lots of detail. The brick wall and street add to the vintage feel. The bright corner at the top left is the only flaw I see... Very nicely done!

fc Funny! The banner was by the door to the rear. I left the banner support posts on the bricks.

elliott, I was bothered by how dark this looked on a second monitor, but my "photo" monitor showed details much better and looked brighter. I never know whether to "brighten" a shot to shoot for the middle range of monitors or just go with looks best on my best calibrated one.

i have a feeling those chrome trim pieces will be here long after the rest of the truck has rusted away. interesting shot. a little dark in the front but still captures a feeling of the not too distant past.
