#120 High or Low Angle Shot
Entry 1 of 22

Last tree of Autumn       ©2012 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       1st place, 206 points
1/100s, f5.6, ISO 80, ?, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Convert from RAW. Adjusted to show more detail on the tree trunk. No other PP (tried not to affect the leaf color as shot).       Extra Info: It's Haloween here and looking up this trunk made it look like a looming monster :-)

Congratulation to the overwhelming victory! Your beautiful dancing monster is growing on me, I would have liked to place it higher, but higher than this you cannot get! Thanks for the "making of" story too, very entertainig!

Thirty votes says something! And to think you took this one lying down! Congratulations!

Kudos Michael. This was quite a landslide victory! This was my #1 choice (because I could not vote for Hank, LOL).

I think it's great that I was not the only one scrounging around on the ground taking pictures for this challenge!

Mepo.... I have just spent 10 minutes looking at this image. I think you took it by falling down and accidently tripping the shutter! LOL!

Seriously, sometimes the most simple images are the most beautiful! Congrats!

I'm quite shocked to find myself in first place, I didn't expect to finish very high in view of the fantastic entries in the challenge. Kudos to you all for entering with such imagination and talent. Many, many thanks for all your votes and comments. I feel very humble.

This tree is just down the street. I checked today and it is still as red as ever - it must be the last red tree in town, all the others have dropped their leaves.

I took this on the last day of the challenge. I took several views but the best one had me lying on the ground with my body twisted, trying to see the image through my bifocals in the flip out lcd which was resting on the ground as it was the only way to get the 'arms' in the frame. Not a soul in sight when I started taking shots but people seemed to come out of the woodwork once I got into the most awkward and embarrassing contortion. Murphy's law I suspect.

Congratulations! Nice finish on both sides. I am quite happy with #2 since I liked your shot much better than mine!

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad so many liked the monster. It took me a while to find the right angle and height to get the monster look. I ended up with the camera's swing lcd touching the ground - I had to lie down to aim :-) Why is it that the street is empty when you start this kind of thing but as soon as you are lying on the ground in an embarrassing position, people seem to appear out of nowhere LOL

When I took the self portrait of myself lying 'dead' in the snow I even had a couple of dogs come up to investigate - I'm sure you can appreciate the danger in that situation :-)

This angle amplifies the power of this tree. The branches make a fine statement and composition. The fall color is lovely.

I love the deep red colors. After reading your extra info. I agree - with the angle you captured, the tree looks a little like a monster with its arms spread out.

Now that's some Fall foliage! Great angle to show it off, love where the light is really bringing out the leaves (top right). I might try some alternative crops, move the trunk around the frame, see if you can bring out the bright leaves even more.

i didnt see the extra info, this is how i saw at as a monster shape. I am assume the original trunk was darker. good capture of the leaf colour

The colors and depth of field really make this one work well.

Ho-hum an up the trunk tree shot. But those reaching arms and bright canopy push this into my top 5!
