Congrats on your finish and excellent timing! (A reward in itself!)

I'm thankful I made top 10. This one was a real challenge for me!

Jade... I am surprised that this didn't finish a lot higher than 10th place. I think it is an incredible capture! I feel you achieved your goal of the dark painting look.

Mepo My first attendance at a re-enactment. It was cheesy but it did give you a sense of what it would have been like. The long lens results in a shortening of perspective. I'd guess they were still quite a ways apart. My better shot, I think, I'll post in outtakes. BTW Many great volleys full of fire and smoke but the flash ends in an instant and getting it timed like here and clear of smoke was very difficult.

Excellent choice for the challenge. The musket fire is fantastic. Great scene - it always amazes me how the troops would walk towards the enemy at such close range and still maintain formation. Interesting how much more powerful the troops appear in your other entry - an interesting contrast between a high and low angle shot.

Lo, I find it interesting how other's views impact on how I look at my own images (which is how it should be and the real value of these Challenges for me). Until I read the comments, I far preferred this shot but almost always enter the first image I decide on in Main and the second in Open. My favourite of the bunch is still the one I'll post in outtakes.

Not as powerful as your open shot, but certainly evocative of some of the battle scenes that hang in the galleries

I agree it doesn't look like much but over 420mm but I'm actually standing above shoulder height of the shooters.

In this beautiful picture there really is a bit high angle, though it does not play a big role in the pic.

Adirondack Gal. I think I'll post a better image in outtakes. The smaller entry format dissuaded me from entering what I think is a better photo.

WOW! This is an incredible capture. The flash and smoke of the muskets is just wonderful! This is a top pick!

Hifi I'm with you. I think if there is any clear winner, it's the little girl. I shot a few images but this is the only one where I managed to get multiple musket flashes in the same frame.

Excellent capture! This just got nudged out of my 1st place vote by the picture of the little girl.

I think this will score in the top 3 for sure. I like how you captured the gun blast from the muskets and the smoke following.

ambaker Definite and obvious blown highlights on the one flare. The out of the camera shot is totally different- I'll post in outtakes.

fc I'm not so sure they were supposed to be firing at will here (I think that started in earnest when the bodies started dropping! - see outtakes).

Nice control of the exposure. You managed to keep detail in the smoke and powder flashes, except for the brightest one. I know how very hard this is to do. You definitely achieved your goal. I like this one very much.

I can hear and smell the black powder. you have captured the problems when firing at will . IE not a controlled drill fire, "The flash in the pan" come to mind
