Jane I am so glad to see this in the top 10... I think you have the right stuff for captureing folks... Keep it up, can't wait to see more from you!! PS I had no idea what the long pole was until Mr Sawyer commented, and OMG like him I had NO idea those things were around anymore... Making your capture just all the more special!!!

I am amazed at the large DOF here considering the use of f3.3.
I didn't know that those wooden newspaper holders were still in use.
I'm happy this photo did so well in the voting.

Old Finn ... I see your point, but then it would no longer be square ... and I like square :)

A good photo, but in my opinion it would have been better if cropped vertically to get the disturbing background smaller.

The scene is very busy, but I think that is what makes the picture work...
I like this person just relaxing and reading with all the surrounding activity. It is also quite funny that her cap has the skulls embroidered into it. Great capture!

The black and white treatment is the only way to go with this shot and you've done it well. There is a lot of business going on, but the main subject still stands out.

This is in my top 10 .... I have one suggestion, Skull cap lady needed to stand out more, I would've blurred the back ground to some extent to pop her out better, I bet you used the nik high structure, ... Any how That being said, This is one totaly cool shot, Where are you gonna find a little ol' lady with skulls on her stocking cap but NYC... Great Job!!!

Super shot. Too bad about the metal rod obscuring the other person’s head – classic telephone pole growing out of the head scene. I think I would have cloned it out. Love the B&W treatment and am glad you did not fuzz the people in the background too much, they are important to the atmosphere – well done.

A moment in time preserved in black and white

I like the use of B&W. It really brings out the business of the scene.

Nice b&w work. I thought there was potential tighter crops available

A nice character study (though it struck me that it does look like she is clubbing through the head of the lady in the back). Despite the complexity of the scene, you've quite effectively rendered a thoughtful portrait well composed and at place in its environment.

Love the clarity and the feeling of being the watcher on the reader of the paper
