Sick!       ©2013 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       2nd place, 168 points
1/1000s, f3.6, ISO 100, 35mm, Manual, Spot, flash

Post-Processing: Cloned out distracting background elements, rotated to extreme off-level horizon, resized, sharpened.(Clone, rotate, crop.) The position of the board and rider and height above the ground are just as shot. Shot was captured at 1/1000 using fill flash to brighten the subject and make him "pop" (that is the flash reflecting off the ground). Like to have your comments if you like the off angle or if it looks too "forced" or unnatural.       Extra Info: Shot many gnarly demos that day!
("sick" = great/cool/rad)
("gnarly" = amazing)
("demos" = stunts)

I love the angle, because the story of your picture is about the boy and not the horizon or the trees.
And very much I agree with Bernie - the visible confusion (I mean disorientation) reflects nicely what one feels being upside down.

Congrats on your double top five!

I think the off angle gives the viewer a sense of what the subject is feeling in the photo! Brave of you to get so close!

Thanks everyone for all your votes and especially your comments.

I was torn about the off angle - see right side up in outtakes. But I agree with Steven Sobel that this image gains everything from the low angle perspective - and the in camera FZ-30 flash which I needed to light this one up at 1/1000 - still love my FZ-30!

Bill, I'm surprised this did this well but technically, if you look to outtakes, you'll see that I did quite a lot to clone out the distracting background (you'll figure it out.) I can't believe you got such a clean shot from such a distance. I was ducking skateboards to get these shots -- a few misses had them flying right over my head - one a real near miss!

Franz, the settings were manual but the focus was auto. I did pre-focus on the concrete at the base of the jump; this guy is a lot closer than this looks - his feet are about two meters (6 feet) from my lens/head.

Old Finn, KJW, eagle 1 - you have your chance to see it in outtakes.

babysister - I got dizzy trying out ALL the angles!

Congratulations! Obviously, great minds think alike. However, I like your shot better. It's much cleaner and more dramatic.

Great shot, I like the angle, gives the image even more energy, well done!

Good sharpness, but I would prefer a level horizon.

Yes, the angle is unnatural - but it's amazing! Everything is perfect in this picture. The sky, the bouncing flash and especially the action.
How did you get him sharp with manual focus, I wonder. And the sky is still beautiful despite the flash.
I think you have a winner here... at least a winner for me!

Can't make up my mind on the rotation. Got dizzy trying to get the angle I liked best. I think I would prefer the horizon level. Great photo.

I really like this shot but I think it would have worked even if wasn't rotated. The trees in background being sideways is takes away from it personally. But great otherwise.

awesome shot and works for me. the fill in was well balanced. I have some colour filters which fit on the flash head and the white would have been blue.
in answer to your question works for me the angle shot
definitely a gnarly shot

I very much like the image and what you have done -- EXCEPT for the extreme off-level horizon. Personally, I think it works better as a portrait rather than landscape positioned view. But I acknowledge that this is such a matter of personal taste and artist prerogative. Still, one of my favs.
