Young Re-enactors       ©2013 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       5th place, 112 points
1/400s, f6.3, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Lots. The original shot is of the girls posing in front of the tents set up in Fort York. The background behind the fort's stone wall (expressway and skyscrapers) was replaced by the harbour shot to be true to the period (the Fort was located on the harbour front before infill moved the water's edge blocks further.)Then used various selection and lighting techniques to pull the girls, formerly in the shade into the light - sort of fill flash without the flash, then lightened the background and added a period "round" exposure plate look. Resized and sharpened. (Layers, cut, select, adjust brightness, sharpen, curves).       Extra Info: Fort York, Toronto, commemorating the battle of York (now Toronto) where American soldiers burned and pillaged the Town of York in 1813. In retaliation, a year later in 1814, the White House was burnt in Washington, D.C.

Congrats on another high finish (despite your dissatisfaction with your own vignette!)

    Congratulations. Jade!
What you did with their faces, only with post-processing, is amazing!
And I like the white vignette - so please don't feel bad. We are just playing!

I beg to differ I like the vignette reminds me of glass plate camera which had a vignette so they could be handled and reduce costs. this would be appropriate for the picture as the time frame.

Congratulations on your top five placement, Jade. It is certainly a worthy image in and of itself, but I think you have already surmised that it might have done better had you not allowed the dramatic post-processing effect to override your better judgment. We've all been there, however. That "Uh oh; I-probably-should-not-have-done-that-but-it's-too-late-to-fix-it" feeling is oftentimes a valuable but at times harsh lesson for us photographers. Still, a wonderful shot you've managed to produce.

Thanks for all your votes and comments! Each one is appreciated.

akebono Yes, of course, you are right. I feel like a rank amateur with the cheesy white vignette -- I don't know what I was thinking but I regretted it as soon as the entry deadline passed. That said, this should have placed ten entries behind your photo. I don't know what the voters were thinking.

babysister - yep, you are right.

KJW - unfortunately... I regret the vignette -- as akebono noted it was a mistake photographically speaking.

fc thanks!

Peanut - see outtakes. This really wasn't difficult. If you want I can email and take you through it step by step.

Franz - you are so good! I hung around a bit until one of their mothers said, "C'mon girls, smile!" So I think the secret is to have a mother around!

How do you always get people to pose that nicely for you, Jade? ;-)
Their smile is worth some really big ice cream for both of them!

Excellent technical work butI thought the theme got lost in the PP-ing.

The expression of the kids is great but the white vignetting is far too dominating and distracting, (which is a pitty).

That's in my humble opinion, of course...
Good luck :-)
