Yep, that's the secret. Keep plugging away. The nice thing is the more you work with GIMP the easier it becomes to work with. The apple "fix" I did and posted in outtakes was about a 20-30 minute process from the time I copied your image until the time I was ready to post my rework of it.

Thank you for all your help. I managed to capture and apple and add it to the pile the other day, so I am getting somewhere. To many grey hairs are slowing down the process, but if will continue to plug away at it and not let a lump of electronis beat me.

Well, try posting a photo of your problem to the forum. A neat little trick if you are using Microsoft windows, or Mac I think, is you can screen capture (convert your screen to a .jpg image) by hitting the key on your keyboard. That moves the screen image to clipboard where you can then paste it as a .jpg to any folder you want. If you google "print screen" you'll figure it out (but it might give you a headache until you find the explanation that works for your operating system (version of Windows)).

You can also download "FastStone Image Viewer" (a free download) which has a nifty Screen Capture function (under the menu click and you can save an image of your screen as a .jpg file.

A couple of screen images that say, see I'm here then I'm here, can make it easier for someone to tell you what you are doing wrong.

All of which may give you a headache. But once you get these tools, you find they're handy.

The worst part of GIMP (or any other PP software) is the how to use it - how to make it work. You can spent lots of time and pull your hair out until finally you figure it out and say, "Gee, if someone could just have told me that at the start."

In sympathy, I'll help where I can if you can show me where you're having trouble. If you can't screen cap, you can try explaining in text the steps and I'll try to figure what the "lock" is you're talking about.

(The other really neat way to problem solve is to "share" your computer with someone. There are programs you can download which allow you to give control of your computer to someone who can "Skype" chat on-line with you while moving your mouse pointer and seeing exactly what your screen is displaying. So you sit back and someone literally shows you the steps by pointing and clicking on your computer. But I only do that with someone I know really well so that won't work here.)

Nice job, Still cant get the hang of layers in gimp but I am keeping on trying, I seem to have a lock in the alpha layer that I cant get rid off.

I played with it after the challange closed and found out how to do some of that, and I agree, it does look a whole lot better

I'll bet if you darked and sharpened this as taken would have made the top 5. The thumbnail which appears in the comment editor looks fabulous!

Nicely done - you've certainly managed to imitate the way the fruit was reflected in Jade's original

I think you should have cloned out the reflection of the cutting board as jade did. The apples actually make a more interesting subject.

Don't usually like straight across lines like this, but somehow this works. A favorite.

I'm flattered. I like your apples more than my pears but like my sharpness more. The thumbnail image is spectacular! If you could hold that clarity in the full size, it would really make the shot. (Also this looks a little bright to me. I'm wondering if your monitor is calibrated - the thumbnail looks a touch darker - better).
