Tropical Harvest       ©2013 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       4th place, 154 points
1s, f2.8, ISO 100, 35mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Rotate to vertical, crop, layer, cut, curves, minor clone, smudge, and burn, crop.       Extra Info: Inspired by the work of Emine Basa who works wonderfully with natural light and some pretty complex compositions, I've fallen far short but learned a few things in the process. http://1x.com/member/eminebasa (Critique welcomed.)

Beautiful image, like a fine oil painting. Looks like it took some work to set up.

Old Finn Thanks.

mariac Still some work to do but I'm getting the hang of it.

It worked beautifully, great detail and textures.

dave56 Lo I think both of you and fc have caught what escaped me which is that the reflection needed to be darkened a bit (or the other parts lightened) to avoid the distracting pull away from the subject.

Reflection made me look harder at the image. Wondered if a more central split between the image and reflection my work better.

This is really interesting. I think the composition is beautiful, well balanced, colourful. I have to admit that when I first looked at the photo, I was distracted by the reflection, which seems to be brighter than the actual subjects. That said, it makes for a very interesting effect. I would rather that the reflection of the mango didn't touch the bottom of the photo, but that's just being picky. As to comparing your work to Bassa's, I think your treatment is quite different, and equally beautiful.

Mepo I was thinking the reflections were getting a little cliche; I'd think twice before doing it again.

fc I agree; a darker reflection would have been better to highlight the fruit.

Love the composition and the almost disappearing bottle. Somehow the texture and reflections on the fruit make it look overripe or perhaps it makes it more like a painting. The reflections on the glass are the best part. In my tt.

an excellent example of still life despite the need for a slow speed.
maybe a slightly darker base?

Something bothered me a lot about this but I wasn't sure what it was. Your four comments have helped me a bit and I think it is the disconnect between the natural fruit (biodegradable) and the out of place glass, bottle and printed labels which are too "processed" (manufactured) to belong to the rest of the grouping.

kardster I'll only be happy when I've got a shot that belongs with Emine's grouping.

cookiejar The arrangement is quite intuitive. I find once I start moving things around it just gets worse.

eagle1 I did try to lighten it a bit overall but lost the mood and tones. I'll post the original image in outtakes so you can see how far from original this result is.

elliott Funny this should remind you of Jade's entries! I agree with the bottom heavy part but didn't find a solution.

This shows it's often not that bad to "fall short" - especially when comparing one's work to those considered masters! I think the reflection adds a lot to this image.

A really nice still life with lots of thought put into the colours and textures used. congratulations.

This is very nice, classic image. Well done, but I wish it weren't quite so dark.

uh ohhh. i kind of like this a lot. reminds me of one of jade's entries and one i tried to do it that style also. just a minor point ... so little of the upper part of the bottle has definition, that it makes the composition bottom heavy.
nice going on your entry.
