The Carpenter's Supper       ©2013 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       3rd place, 142 points
1s, f3.2, ISO 100, 53mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Duplicate image, adjust EV, HDR, work in layers to adjust by tone, curves, smudge, clone, brightness       Extra Info: Like my main entry, this was a technical exercise for me but I know the composition and background still needs some work.

The title is weakly allegorical simply because I couldn't think of anything better.

Another beautiful image, don't know how you do these! I found the tins a little distracting perhaps because they upstage the other subjects.

Great stuff jade. I'm still amazed at your rendering of the bread - superb - I can smell it!

Thanks for all your votes and comments. I appreciate every one.

elliott The exif shows 35mm equiv. lens but I can tell you that lens to bottom frame was about 18 inches.

Thanks, Una. There is room for improvement but I do like the overall look.

Normally I don't like still lifes. But this one is so perfect, it was a real WOW effect when I first saw it. Amazing!

johcomyn The background and blown foreground aside, and the composition, I do like the overall feel of it.

Lo The pans were an effort to give some depth; I agree they are not quite right though.

Mepo Well, I agree, lol! (Not sure the bread and wine was too obvious though).

There is so much that I really like about this photo. The detail in the bread, the crumbs, the composition and the colour. The only thing that spoils it for me is the two pans in the background, because they reflect too much light and detract from the rest of the still life.

The biscuit tins throw me off as they don't belong there and the light foreground is a minor niggle. The wine, grapes and especially the bread are great although I prefer my bread hand cut not pre-sliced. Lastly I suggest you need to oil your knife handles to prevent further deterioration. On the positive side the image fires up my appetite and I just want to dig in and share a glass of that excellent Shiraz - I think the Aussies do that wine best. We have some Brie that has just reached that perfect soft stage and I just had to go and slice some bread for it after seeing this. Very well done.

kemosabe No question the HDR enhanced the image there.

fc I agree the background is in need of work; the other side of the wine label has a UPC code on it so I rotated it just out of view.

as there is no cheese a ploughmans title would not work.
i agree some more work on the background. maybe more of the wine label?

cookiejar I agree the composition is the weakest part.

elliott There's a name for this! I really do prefer the linen to the reflection as well. The reflection looks so cliche.

eagle 1 I tried hard to disguise the blown highlight but not very successfully. I should have reshot or done some aggressive cloning. Usually I take multiple exposures bracketing for just such a problem but didn't here.

The low light creates a nice atmosphere here. Not sure about the composition but like the details.

yes, this one balances better. and i like the linen under the composition instead of the reflective surface.

the link i found refers to this style as 'dutch nouveau'. i love it for still life. i put a copy of the one that i had put in a challenge here in rotation on the slide show of photos that come up on the screen savers on our point of sale terminals at work. looks good when it comes around on the terminal in the bar/lounge.

edit.. sat. afternoon.
this is starting to move up in my fav's. and i'm already composing one in my head for future challenge in this style.

A bit over exposed at the bottom, but I very much like the mood and composure. One of my faves.
