Owl Eye       ©2014 mbbin2
Panasonic DMC-ZS40       1st place, 213 points
1/59s, f6.4, ISO 1000, 720mm, Shutter Priority, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: converted from raw cropped, resized in cs6.
applied Topaz detail3.
Extra Info: I was shooting the great horned owl at the local
raptor center's photo day. I was trying for a fill
the frame head shot when he moved.
When I viewed in the camera I could not figure
out what was attached to the eye. When looking
on the computer, I saw that IT was his eye.
I googled and could not find any other photo
vaguely like this one.

Congratulations, it's a very nice shot. I found it a bit too noisy, perhaps it was cropped a lot?

Very impressive! The clarity is amazing at such a high zoom! My #2

Thanks, all. Mepo, the owl was in a tree. The green stuff is leaves that i was trying to focus thru.

Amazing shot but where does the green fit in? Is it a reflection or what? Still my favourite but just wondering.

Great capture. Textbook quality for the window into the soul.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I did not think of the noise until a couple of comments about it. Now I see it everytime I look.

Franz07, this was my new zs40. A tiny, neat camera which goes from 24 to 720mm. I was a little self conscious at the raptor shoot surrounded by all of the Canon and Nikon on tripods.

Jade, you got me. I was shooting thru the tree leaves and could not avoid them all. I must confess this was an accidental shot. In camera I thought it was a throw away because of the 'spot' on the eye.

Such a cool shot because it seems so unique. While I can't figure our what the green is behind the eye (and that bothers me a lot - makes it look like the eye has no body behind it) this will probably be my top pick. mbbin2, I presume. If so, you are building an impressive portfolio of work.

I think this is a No 1 shot really powerful image.

    Beautiful!
720mm - I wonder what gear you used! Great shot, no doubt!

Fascinating close-up, remarkably clear. Maybe a gigantic tear about to fall... ? :)

Owls have 24x leica lens ( small but high resolution) inbuilt. That is why you see this bumpy convex lens.

With two eyes totally in front of face like zoom binocular, they see in superb 3D high resolution with accurate depth perspective.

terrific shot. Sharp and interesting. Might have cropped a bit more off bottom of image, but a minor thing. Regarding the last second head turn by the bird, we all know that being lucky is a big part of what we do! BTW, that you in the reflection?

Fantastic idea and capture! I'm not sure I like the amount of noise in the image, but it's probably more a matter of taste. Otherwise, good job!

This is a great interpretation of the challenge. It's bit noisy.
