Thank you all for your votes and comments. I can't say I understand how this shot ended up on top but appreciate it had a wide enough appeal. Seems funny to place first with only 3 first place votes. (See outtakes for more - I have lots so just a sample - all of them declassified, lol!)

this finished higher than I predicted but then what do I know.
my failing eyesight [another opticans visit booked today] i cannot see the joins. and having blown it up i can now also see the tanks are different.
showed it to my colleque who was a 'Tanker' he couldnt get into a turret today but it liked this very much and also your extra on the main.cant wait to show it to my sister who is licensed to drive tracked vehicles [tanks in MOT language] thats ministry of transport. she passed her driving test at our tank training school

I'm a bit surprised at this one, Jade - not because it isn't a great photo, but military photos generally don't do well. So kudos to you for breaking the mold! I have to say I still prefer your photo in the Main.

Who's a thought! That's what you get when you operate on the ground instead of swanning about in the air :-) Congrats. Very powerful pano.

Old Finn Thanks. If you think the photo is dramatic you should see what it is like looking down the barrel through the lens!

cookiejar I'm flattered but I don't think so. But I am pleased you like it that much.

Good work. The view is interesting, a bit dramatic.

babysister I really am pleased you like it. I think it could have been better but all considered I'm not complaining.

ysal I try not to abuse my equipment so really it wasn't out a lot here.

neat I really think you have a talent and are a better photog than most here (including me) but I can't think this is better than at least 10 other entries this time (ie. I would predict this won't make top 10).

Amberbug Thanks!

fc Actually "Bulldog" wasn't here. These are all Gulf War vintage and later (note the sloping armour plating - thicker cross section on a horizontal strike while keeping plates thinner = less weight.) The compressed air was all from my lungs, lol! -- and lots! -- together with a brush. I did my best to keep my vital parts covered but my camera wasn't one of them. (And in neither case did I use cling wrap!)

Mepo, Your commander in the navy dive team? Boy we you deployed in the wrong theatre! (Sound like classic military SNAFU!) Yes, I should have worked a bit to make this one appear less like a collage.

Bill Putting this one together was an exercise, lol!

this one goes with the bulldog in the main and asuming it leading from the front.
you have got a wonderful overall picture which not only gives scale to the event and i can hear the noise.
how many cans of compressed air did you use afterwards
or dif you cover vital parts with cling flim?

I used to hate these exercises, especially when the commander would say "Eat my dust". Good initial impact but it loses something as the edges start to appear. Still in my favourites - well composed.

A powerful shot even if an exercise and manipulated. A favorite.

RolandB You are right. Funny how you work a photo and say, "Done", then enter it and look at it again after the Challenge is open for votes and say, "Ah, I should have have...."

Needs a bit more smudging on the joints, but still a wonderful photo. Don't see this everyday :)

eagle1 I knew I should have sepia toned it! (Now just wait for the comment by someone who is ticked because the American flag looks like it is at half-staff - hey, I didn't fly it, and I'm not from the country that put it, or tanks like these, where they are.)

Great concept and eye-catching imagery, but a little too washed out for my taste. Could use some added color and/or darkening or contrast to bring out the tanks - IMO. Still, in my top 5.
