Hummer at a Chinese Lantern Flower       ©2014 ysal
Panasonic DMC-FZ150       1st place, 248 points
1/500s, f5.1, ISO 160, 584mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Adjusted exposure, lightened shadows, reduced noise, sharpened, adjusted saturation, cropped, resized, all using PS Elements.       Extra Info: I had spent a couple of hours at the local arboretum. Just as I was leaving, this little hummer flew by and started feeding at a Chinese Lantern Flower shrub. I really liked the delicate veins on the flower complementing her feathers.

Congrats ysal. I love the motion blur in the wings. It brings the photo to life.

Congratulations! I have taken many hummingbird pictures and it's not an easy task, but you captured this little female perfectly!

well done and the previous experience of the birds show in the capture.
the exif with mm length does sometime not appear correctly but when the birds fly and camera ready who worries over 14mm

This is even more beautiful on this monitor. I was pleased to see your note that you have some experience shooting these. I didn't think this was just a lucky shot. The first place votes tell the whole story.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments!

Out_of_focus: 581mm vs. 600mm = Only having seconds to react to the situation, trying to do the minimum before starting to fire off shots and prey I get something decent :-) !!

    congrats ysal..
a well deserving winner.. the birds eye looking directly into the camera is cute..
Any reason why you chose 581mm zoom instead of 600?

Wow wow wow!!!! I'm so honored by this! I knew this was a very special capture for me because I love hummingbirds. But it was such a fluke capture! I had my camera pre-set on P mode after an afternoon of shooting, and I didn't have time to change any settings when this opportunity presented itself to me. I do have quite a bit of practice shooting hummer and I suppose it really paid off here. Thank again so much, it really means a lot to me.

I like the way you have isolated the bird and flower either by DOF or proximity. Great focus, lighting, and color. In my favs.

Beautiful capture, excellent detail and lovely colours (unimporantly, I would have liked it even more cropped closer to the bird's tail , compensating by showing more above the flower) A clear favorite.

I love this capture! The hummer shows up well against the buttery soft background. I'm sure this will finish high in the standings! Good Luck!

I love this photo of the humming bird. So clear yet capturing the movement in the wings leaving a wonderful amount of detail to see the feathers in flight. The exposure (for me) was perfect as well as the aperture being opened to allow the shallow depth of field to blur the background. Beautiful job. :)

One can dream about getting a shot like this. Love everything about it. I suspect it takes a lot of experience to be ready to compose and capture a shot as well as this when it is presented without warning. Thanks for sharing it with us!

It is tough to get this kind of even lighting and sharpness of focus with a hummingbird so you've done well here. 1/500s is not enough to freeze the wing but in some ways, this shot works best, I think, as you have it with the wing slightly in motion blur.
