The Drums       ©2014 Mepo
Canon EOS REBEL T3i       7th place, 105 points
1/5s, f14, ISO 1600, 1040mm, Shutter Priority, Center Weighted Average, no flash
Post-Processing: As taken except a couple of distractions cloned out and resized.       Extra Info: This was an outdoor show at sunset. The sound of the drums filled the whole arena when they arrived. I tried to capture the experience.

Used shutter priority and zoomed away from the subject while I released the shutter. Camera was hand held but I braced myself against a railing. Lighting from arena floodlights.

"Art Gallery of Ontario (or was that an Ad hoc Group of Obnoxious self righteous presumptives"

Isn't that one and the same ? LOL

How arrogantly Toronto-centric of me...Art Gallery of Ontario (or was that an Ad hoc Group of Obnoxious self righteous presumptives?)

Neat. Given your talent in this area your comment was very much appreciated.

Dear Jade: You have me on the floor laughing. Too much humour first thing in the morning :-) If I didn't know you better I would be worried about your blood pressure but I know that an acrobatic pilot such as you would not be successful if they were not able to keep everything in balance and perspective.

I don't know what the AGO stands for - Attorney General of Ontario perhaps. If so there's your problem - you can't expect to put art in front of a bunch of lawyers and expect a reasonable outcome. I mean, have you ever seen a legal beagle who knows anything about art!! Here come de judge LOL

Yeah, well wait to you hear how my entry in the oil painting category did at the Art in the Park competition sponsored by the AGO - evidently the prevailing public commentary was that it looked far too much like a real oil on canvass painting with distinctive brush strokes and splashes of well defined colour which is to say, not photo-real enough for the judges! Who'd have thought that they wanted paintings that looked like photographs even though the entry form said, "Show us your best impression of an oil painting!" Evidently, Ansel Adams was what they had in mind all along. (I also got marked down for using a variety of brushes, evidently wide brushes were not allowed -- too painterly art like in the effect - it was strictly a narrow brush competition. Of course they allowed the painting done by a ballet dancer who stepped en pointe in buckets of paint and then piroetted across her canvass since dance is certainly a form of art and using the tips of her toes only really were just like narrow brushes.)

I really thought this woud be top 3, still think it should've been.

Ahhh jade - I so wanted to chide you for not including photography as art in your comments but didn't want to tip you off about my entry.

Mepo If only I thought the Challenge had been about impressionist photography (rather than impressions of impressionistic art) I'd have changed all my votes and ranked this one high in my picks~! ? Congrats on the top ten finish!

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I think cookiejar put in words what I was trying to capture.

These are the pipes and drums of the Fort Henry Guard. If you ever get to Ontario be sure and see the Sunset ceremony - it's one of the best I have seen. Every fall they do a joint performance with the USMC band and that brings the emotional impact to an even greater high.

I looked at this shot and realised what an important role impressionist photography (Sorry Bernie & Jade) has to play. There is no way a regular photograph could have conveyed this impression.

It looks as if the drum beats have created the blurred image. Great result.

    Very dramatic effect. Well done.

I love the composition, the sense of movement and the bright splashes of colour

I like this one. Looks more abstract to me than impressionist.

being first in the voting section is hard but you have a good result here
i thought it was a set up with toy soldiers when viewed in thumbnails but you have captured the scene and i can here the drum beats.

A very fun image indeed, love the vibrating drumkits, and the vivid red. Well done, you are my 3rd pick.

I like this a lot. The drummers almost look like little toys. The zoom effect worked well.

Do your best impression of the impressionistic art style, is what the Challenge says.

This clearly is photo-impressionist but not sure if it is what the Challenge called for. I think there will be as many views on this as there are entries but my view is that this isn't that. That said, it is a striking and interestingly well done image.

Eva: When you say "not sure about your technique" do you mean that you do not like the zooming + release technique in this photo or you do not like it as an impressionist tool - I noticed that it does not appear to be a technique you use in your own shots.

Interesting. I really like the colour red here. Make the image really to pop up. I'm not sure about your technique but overall nicely done.

Great capture! Sort of an "impressionistic / selective focus" photo that has eye capturing colors and activity, yet simple and elegant. My favorite.
