  #147 Impressionism
Entry 10 of 24

Sidewalk Cafe       ©2014 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       10th place, 99 points
1/8s, f9, ISO 80, ?, Shutter Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Correct overexposure. Clone out one distraction. Resize.       Extra Info: Taken at our local farmers market. Loads of flowers hanging in the sidewalk cafes make them very attractive. This experience has made me realize I need a ND filter.

Shutter priority, shutter released while zooming out. I find zooming out makes it easier to keep the camera focused where you want it. I think I may have not made a smooth zoom as the brush effect on the flowers did not appear as nicely on some other shots.

This was one of my top 3. It is a perfect example of "Impressionism", of everyday scenery captured with lots of light and colors. Very nice, congrats.

Thank you Jade. The voters were very generous in my case.

By the way - about the screaming - those aren't puns that are screaming to get out. You have what, in the medical profession, is called GTS. No it's not Greater Toronto anything, it's Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. My advice - keep biting your tongue. :-)))

In all the excitement I neglected to congratulate you on two top ten finishes! Impressive considering how diverse the views and votes were in this Challenge.

Just shows you have a wide appeal! (- o.k. I'm biting my tongue to hold back on all the puns screaming to get out after that lead up line... )

mrsawyer: Using auto-focus I zoom in to what I want to be the central part of the photo. Then I zoom out and release the shutter during the zoom. I find the speed of the zoom makes the most difference in the result. As I mentioned, I may have unintentionally hesitated while zooming out resulting in the 'brushstrokes' in the flowers.

Did you try the zooming technique with the image out of focus at the start or in focus? I think it works better starting out of focus. (but what do I know?)

Impressed with the way the zoom pulls you into the image

Using the zoom creates quite an interesting effect. Love the bright colours

good zooming here. nd filter? can you set underexposure on the camera. i usually set the 10 sec self timer so i can control camera and zoom in or out as the shutter operates

Perfect subject and an effective technique combine here for a great result.

    Light and its reflection.
The appearance of quickly painted surfaces.
The appearance of short brushstrokes.
Separating colors and letting the eye's perception mix them.
Modern life as the subject matter.

It's the second and third lines I'm having trouble with. The central part of the image and radiating lines don't quite work for me.

I like the way the flowers "zoom" out right at you and the setting you've chosen; however, the total effect does not, in my opinion, quite attain an "impressionistic" result.
