Beautiful lighting - I love how the light shines through the feathers.

So why did the ducks cross the road?
Great shot - ducks have so much character.

      Very striking picture.
I've tried the same kind of thing myself - without success.
You've motivated me to try again.

Not sure it suggests an aroma to me, but I do like the picture.

Nice composition, I like how the diagonal separates new\old.

Not sure how on-theme this is, but great shot, voted for it anyway.

Thanks for all the nice comments (and votes).

As for the backstory: We're hosting an exchange student, and took her to Sovereign Hill, a re-creation of a 19th Century goldrush town. I figured all those old-style buildings and people in period costume would be fertile hunting ground for a B&W theme, so I was prowling the streets looking for targets when I looked in the window of an Ironmongers store (Hardware store in 21st century speak) and knew straight away I'd found my entry. B&W is all about light and shade and shape, and those spirals were just irresistible.

@mepo - well spotted! Those drill bits are probably over 100 years old.

      Thanks for the comments.

kerszkavet: It's here https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.8087087,144.96249,3a,75y,165.21h,136.94t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZjg8yHlRupI7Pmh1X0_F8Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

I'd gone to take a photo of the other building you'll see if you scroll about 120 degrees left, but in the end decided I liked this shot better. Both are examples of what happens when a university lets their architecture school design their new buildings.

Good call, tilting my head to 'correct your mistake' makes the photo less interesting.

Starkly beautiful. I hardly ever do B&W myself, but I find myself voting for a lot in this competition, maybe I need to branch out a little...

      Wow, second place, I'm honored.
2 clowns in the top 4, obviously I'm not the only one who finds clowns creepy.

In answer to the where/how questions, the scary clown was walking, part of a street parade.
The SX50's huge zoom let me get up close and personal without getting close enough to trigger my phobia.
The 13 fps burst mode is a lifesaver in crowds, 10 pics in quick succession greatly improves the chances of getting the 'money shot' without the back of someones head spoiling everything. Plus, I'm tall, which helps.

Thank you all for the nice comments.
A few answers...
@Joanna: Yes, I'd have liked to have kept more of the sky and sand, but to keep within the panachallenge size limits, more height == less width == scaling the picture down even more, which made the little boy on the left an unrecognizable blob, and I really wanted to keep him in.
@Jade: 'Surf Beach' is the name of the place, and it usually has plenty of surf, but yes, on the day the photo was taken the surfers were very disappointed.

@elliott: I can't claim any credit for the seamless stitching - the photo is taken using panorama mode on my iPhone (although that presents challenges of its own. Good results with the iPhone require a steady hand and lots of practice)
