Many thanks to all who for your good wishes, votes and comments. It was worth standing in mud for an hour with wind and rain. Around dusk the wind dropped and the rain eased and allowed me to get this image. Other photos taken before and after and not worth looking at.
Anthony: The original photo is wider and that is the version I have hanging on my wall. For some reason I felt I had to do a crop at the left for this comp.
Cookiejar: The height of the tripod was critical as you noticed. I had to get high enough to get a space between the boat and the jetty without losing the horizon. Just luck that my tripod went to that height.

He/she is gorgeous. The background is perfect. So hard to catch this fellow and get a clear picture. Well composed and exposed with a good catchlight in the eye.

Well composed with the twigs framing the face. Her expression is powerful and I think more than a little wistful. In my TT.

I keep wanting to give him a hug! What a lovely portrait. The colours are fantastic and the expression, composition and the wonderful look at you is excellent. In my top 5.

This is unique and so well caught. The white is good and with the good focus and shutter speed you have done so well.
In my top 5.

Beautiful serene scene well captured. I love the way the slow shutter speed has portrayed the flow of the water, and the clarity of the water. My #2 pick.

Jonathan is so well caught and obviously interested in the whole process. Beautiful white. Something about the background distracts my eye. Should the background be more blurred? In my tt.

Lovely lighting in this WOW photo. You have caught the surfer and the waves beautifully. It may be just a swell coming but the horizon is sloping. In my tt.

Beautiful composition but it needs a little more light on the foreground in my opinion. In my tt.

I love the exposure and the expression on the face. Beautiful catch lights in the eyes. The only thing that I think is missing is a bit of context such as a tool or fire to show that he really is a blacksmith. In my tt.

Lovely composition. I would have liked a fraction more exposure on the boats and buildings. In my tt.

I am jealous of this one. I love these photos of derelict buildings. In one photo you have done so well with the light so that all the photo is well exposed. Minute detail all over. The composition is excellent with the lines and the vanishing point. Well done. In my top 5.

This photo keeps tugging me back. I love the serenity of it amid the obvious poverty. The colour is perfect. My only distraction is the window bars at the side. I might have cloned that out or cropped to the edge of the window. High in my favourites.

This is a real WOW. (without the BOW)!
I love the crop especially as you have been brave enough to crop the nose too. It gives it good balance. Every hair is showing, and the eye is perfect. My No 1.

Thanks for all the comments. I had a few chuckles reading them especially remarks about the clothes, the colour of the wine and the unforgivable edge crop on the bottom of the glass. The model had arrived for dinner (Chilli con Carne!) not to be a model. He suggested his work clothes (nerdy computer programmer) were not suitable but I just wanted to try a shot to see if was feasible so took. The wine was from the bottom of a flask and smelled dreadful.
The next week I had the proper lighting all set up in the garage and he was going to tidy himself up a bit, and he had to cancel - so I had no option but to submit this one. I wonder if the other one would have done so well?
