The boat was moving, not the horizon. ;-)

Congratulations Bill. Well I did consider you but then thought : Na, Bill would never put in an entry with a crocked horizon. NOT !! Just kidding - I had no clue whatsoever. Loved the shot though.

Thanks for all the good comments. I am most gratified that Mepo did not find me out on this set. I think the location must have thrown him off. I am not supposed to be in NY!

Congrats on the top 8 ranking! I could tell this was the work of an experienced photog by the image, but was thinking akebono. All the same, his Open entry is shot also from a boat and of a group of people!

Right on theme. My tt for sure. Like the 2/3 composition.

as with all boats, apart from one all are indulging in talk to each other, rather than looking out or using the camera........

These passengers are so involved in what they are doing, that you'd almost think the photographer was invisible. It's a wonderfully natural shot, taken against a beautiful backdrop.

This is a tough one for me. Clearly in my top ten, with a clarity, contrast, and colour which makes the final image look particularly refined technically, with all elements particularly well exposed, given the chance for clipping in highlights and loss of detail in shadows. I would like to know how you did your exposure adjustment.

Technical merits aside, the people add a clear element of interest though the great disparity in blocking (placement of posed bodies) between the foregoing part subjects and the full bodies in the background bothers me quite a bit.

The background, though necessary is, for me, the downfall of the image. The scenery is too prominent an element and too intrusive into an otherwise excellent arrangement of subjects. I am unsure how to "rescue" that and any attempt to "soft focus" or darken the background would detract measurably from the sharpness and clarity of the image.

This image evokes for me another fine image, which, if you compare, you may see how the background is made less of a distraction:

On balance, I remain unsure how to rank this one. [Edit. The horizon, too, looks a little off level.]

Suits well to the topic. Nice composition, good sharpness and colors.
My 1:st choice.

The harsh light of the middle of the day did you no favours here. Peoples faces are bright or shadowed and we do not have the golden glow of early or late light. However given that this is when you took the shot you have done well to mix foreground and background interest.
