Entry 5 of 33
Pipes and Tanks       ©2015 Edward
Nikon D7100       5th place, 152 points
1/10s, f8, ISO 100, 97mm, Manual, Center Weighted Average, no flash
Post-Processing: Converted to B&W; added tone mapping contrast; cropped to square format.       Extra Info: To me, there is a sort of non-human beauty to the complex but orderly "guts" of this large power station.

To answer your questions, I tone map all the time. I'm a fan of the special look it can produce (see my entries #147 Main, #145 Open outtakes, #136 where you live both Main & Open, #135 Open, etc.) My critique with your image here is that it is grey flat and dull. Look at johncomyn's winning entry in Main which is sharp, shiny, and full of life for a similarly cold, metallic, static scene.

The amount of detail and clearity on this shot is mind blowing!! Well don on your T5 placing.

This was in my top 3. Really fantastic visual treat!

    Congrats on your top 5 eagle1 !

I debated for quite a while about entering this image, knowing some would feel it was not "landscape" enough (or at all). I think I even entered two different "landscape" type images before settling on this one. In the end, I just loved the details and "SciFi" industrial atmosphere of the image. I'm not unhappy about the placement.

    amazing shot, great treatment.

You have done a great job at capturing the great complexity of this power station. I wonder who designs these things! I'm sure there must be a simpler way of doing it :-) . For this challenge I would have preferred to see something of what is around this area of the station but I realise that you would loose a lot of detail given the pixel lengths we are limited too.

Forkcandles: I wish I knew what you were trying to say . . .

I love stuff like this. This isn't a landscape per se, but very industrial and well visualized. The square crop is well chosen, and the B&W processing adds to the industrial look of the photo.

In spite of not being(in my mind) a true landscape, it's one of my favorite images.

Right on theme, probably the most industrial looking shot in the challenge. I think I would prefer more contrast or perhaps just deeper blacks. The main thing is that I love the composition and the subject and that brings it into my top choices.

yes the old way of covering with a building skin when it was not necessary.

Feb 15, 2015
Great choice for the industrial theme - I like the square format and the B&W conversion, though I wonder if a bit more contrast would have brought out the detail better.

The steel components make a nice ornament here. High in my favorites.

I think we've had this discussion before, Jade. If I remember correctly, you're just not a fan of tone mapping/HDR. My question is: is it really that -- or is my processing of the image just lackluster? If you can, please explain to me what I could have done differently that would make you change your mind about this image?

Great subject but something very flat in the tone mapping result takes all the life out of this one for me.

Beautiful shot. And I agree that it is very organic, reminds me of a Giger art. Great B&W treatment too.

    Great patterns, and very industrial!

There is nothing to distract you from the industrial theme. Great interpretation, B+W was an excellent choice.

Leanneqld: this was my interpretation of the "micro" view of an industrial landscape.

A very interesting landscape to be sure!

Feb 12, 2015
You nailed the industrial part but it's missing the landscape feel. B&W was a nice choice.
