I thought the unusual crop set this shot apart from an otherwise common pelican shot. It guides your attention to the piercing eye. Was in my top 5.

I don't think it gets any better than this for a "portrait shot" of the avian variety. Obviously many agree. Congrats!

Thanks for all the comments. Did you notice that a lot of your don't agree with each other? Jade, however, has it right! ;-)

In my favs, but not a fan of the crop. Perhaps isolating it to a head shot would have worked better.

Beautiful details in the feathers and I love the crop.

Beautiful detail and colors. Wanting a tiny bit of space before the beak but still this is in my faves.

I'm not always so interested in wildlife kinds of photos, but this one is particular good. It's got some great tones, color and contrast and the framing is effective... and a bit unusual. I'd be curious to see if I might like a wider crop with more of the bird in it (and less cut off) even better though. The diagonal line that goes through the composition is very effective. I like how you've thought to use this more severe, more "arty" kind of framing on a kind of subject where it isn't used so often...

Great shot - absolutely wonderful detail and colour. It bothers me that I can't see the stretch, but I know that you would lose too much detail with a brader crop. I hope you'll post the original in the outtakes. Definitely a high favourite.

Perfect shot in many respects. I wonder if you will get much 2nd guessing on the crop. It must have been a difficult choice to make. I think you chose well.

Great shot of the bird - especially the colors in the head and beak, but I find the pose uncomfortable - looks like it's injured or something.

Very colourful Pelican, great composition, exposure and clarity, high favourite. (The pelicans are very different from our Australian ones which are predominately white and black)

IMHO the crop is too tight as there are no feet and the stretched wing span would have been more effective
that said theses pictures are not planned in advance so a good result
