Post-Processing:
Focused stacked multiple shots in Zerene Stacker to achieve greater DOF and masked out background in LR to isolate the frond. Decreased highlights and increased clarity.
Extra Info:
I was attracted to the curly tips of these new fronds which eventually straighten out. Consider this an experiment. I used Panasonic's focus bracketing feature to take 21 shots. I stacked those with Zerene Stacker to increase the dof. The background was distracting from the main subject so I decided to mask it out. After processing I noted that I could have used slightly more dof but by then conditions were no longer suitable for reshooting. This is one of my first focus stacking efforts. It's a useful and fun technique to have in one's bag of tricks and not terribly difficult with special stacking software (I used a trial version) but it requires experimentation to determine the best settings and number of shot needed in a stack for each image. I'm sure that becomes easier with experience.gf

A fine choice. I love the lighting, DOF, focus and framing! Congrats on your high finish.

Great shot. Thanks for all the info on the stacking. I can see how it will make a lot of close up shots better.

This is absolutely beautiful and my No1. The composition, detail and colour are excellent. I am curious as to what the photo would have looked like without the stacking. Is there any way you could post an original from the 21 taken to give an idea of the effect of the stacking?

Really striking image.

The unfurling curls do make a nice pattern. I like the bright green against the black.

Bold image. My only quarrel is that the "patterning " is not that obvious and the suspension of the fern looks unnatural. Perhaps it is my jaundiced eye.

The sharpness is amazing, you can only acheive through stacking, I'd imagine. Very interesting curls. The lighting is a bit harsh against the dark background.

striking image and on theme... the out of focus in front and rear is a bit distracting but still in my favorites.
