Post-Processing:
Replaced the background behind the bottles and their shadows with a second shot of open water (on a separate layer). Multiplied bottle/shadows layer and background layer to get the background to show through the bottles. Merged layers. Duplicated the merged layers and used Color Burn to make the edges of the bottles more visible. Selectively adjusted exposure. Cloned out a few distracting details.
Extra Info:
Combination of two shots:
1st shot: The plain glass bottles lit from behind with an off camera flash, casting shadows onto the white paper they were standing on.
2nd shot: Took a shot of an open stretch of water and used it to replace the original white background

Your outtakes make the end result you achieved here even more amazing.

I loved this shot - had it at 2nd. Congratulations.

Congrats, I really love those bottles and the light!

I liked this, especially the dappled light. (Dappled is one of those lovely words that express what they describe so well). The water didn't bother me except that it made the perspective false. It made the bottles look as if they were tipped toward the viewer.

Having an idea of how you did this increases the interest to me! Bravo, I must give you a hand!!!

Brilliantly done. The composition is thoughtfully done, with the smaller bottle offset to create a more pleasing shadow pattern. The use of the water as a backdrop really adds to the entire effect.

well done and on theme and creative ... in my favorites.

Great concept and execution -- like the light patterns projected through the bottles. Good composition, too.

Jade: Interesting dilemma. Should personal likes/dislikes affect our judgement of the entries? I must confess in my case, and I suspect I'm not alone here, it probably does. Something I'll have to keep in mind in the future.

While admire the technical explanation and the effectiveness of the end result, I just don't know if I like the image and yet it checks every box on my checklist of what makes a good photo good.

ysal: Thanks. I thought the white background was a bit boring and it didn't really show off the lighter areas in the bottle shadows. So I wanted a background that was a bit darker, but with a bit of texture to it. I happened to have just taken the shot with the water included, so I used that. In hindsight I should have just said I replaced the white background with a blue background to forestall complaints that bottles don't sit on water :-).

Love the bottles and the shadows, great lighting. I didn't even realize the background was water until I read your Extra Info and honestly I don't know if that was necessary.

jomari: I probably provided to much Extra Info :-). If I'd just said "replaced white background with blue background", no one wold probably have realized it was a stretch of water. I created several versions of this and went back and forwards on which to submit. I'll post a couple of others, including a white background version, in the outtakes.

I like the layout. The water ripple effect is really good.

I love the bottles, I love their shadows. I'm not sure that I like the water overlay. Bottles don't sit on water and it makes it a little uncomfortable. I think I'd prefer the plain white paper,
