Congrats. I shot one of these lying on the ground for the challenge also. I wasn't pleased with the result, so did not present it. I liked Jomari's comment about the "hungry baby birds".

Your comments were interesting. I'd never seen one of these until we were in Myrtle Beach a couple of years back. I found it fascinating and a little disturbing. It was a most annoying ball that stuck to absolutely everything. Looking closely at it brought out some ugly images and I wondered at the time why I had never seen it in a Sci-fi movie as some sort of evil source. I was glad to put it out of my mind and concentrate on something more attractive. I'm glad to hear you haven't reached bottom and sincerely hope that you don't go there. There have been times in my life when people have told me 'Time heals everything'. What absolute nonsense. Time does not heal, but the passing of time lets us put pain into some perceptive and balance it along with all the love and beauty that, in my case, have never faded. I wish you well.

Congrats, beautifully done. Definitely should have placed higher than mine.

The more I looked at this shot, the more I liked it - and I think that's a quality of great photos.

Congrats Steve, was my number 1. Maybe a little too clinical, but very well photographed. Maybe a subtle forest trees in the background.

Very stark and thought-provoking. It's the type of photo really tweaks the imagination. Love the monochrome treatment. I do find it a bit lost in space, but perhaps that adds to the mystique as well.

Beautifully photographed and processed. It makes me think of a whole lot of hungry baby birds.

Good subject. Perhaps a little bit closer?

Well shot = like the sharp detail. A tighter crop on a black background would be really dramatic (still would leave me thinking of Covid, though!)

Very attractive shot. I love the DOF. I'm usually a big fan of negative space but I feel there's so much here, it's almost distracting. I think I would prefer the left and right sides cropped equally to make the frame square. This is a minor point though.

Jade O: It's not beautiful. I don't expect everyone to like it. Maybe I should have titled it "Inner Self-portrait". The eyes are said to be a window into the soul. I believe the images we make are a projection of the soul, including fears and self-doubt about what we think others see or think about us. The mind reflecting on the mind reflecting on the mind reflecting is an infinite regression. I've not reached the bottom yet.

Technically well executed, I don't like it.

It took a while for me to make my mind up on this one. Now I like the starkness, empty space and monochrome. Well done!

Super details. This has a very organic and alien feel to it, it reminds me of artwork by somebody I can't remember, maybe Giger. Some of those protrusions look like arms.

forkcandles: That's a sweet gum tree seed pod. It's about 3 cm in diameter. As you might know from previous discussions on this site, I believe images should be judged on aesthetics only and have advocated that all Extra Info be hidden during voting. For that reason, I typically minimize what extra information I provide before voting.

The depth of field for the lens focal length and distance from the subject here is probably just a millimeter or so. Stacking was necessary to capture the whole pod in focus. Newer models of Panasonic cameras have a post-focus function that effectively stacks in-camera, but I have found it doesn't work well on all subjects or scenes, particularly close-ups. Here I used Zerene stacking software which is much faster and simpler to use than Photoshop for stacking.

the extra info would have a mention as to what is it as give some idea of size as there is nothing in the image to show this
stacking is in favour at the moment
