  #166 Balance: A Composition Tool
Entry 9 of 27

The Last Persimmon       ©2015 wrosenthal
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       9th place, 106 points
1/125s, f2.8, ISO 100, 1069mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Cropped, slight color adjustment and some minor shading of the upper background.       Extra Info: This is a fairly classic diagonal composition, moving from lower left to upper right. However, try to imagine the image with only the large persimmon and its branch in the photo. Large areas of negative space would remain and the subject would be out of balance. Balance is achieved in two ways. First, the persimmon remnant that fills otherwise negative space and the small piece of branch on the right that interrupts the vertical line. Second, there is some balance contributed by the shading of the background, from green hues at the bottom balanced by the transition to black at the top.

I agree it is well balanced and a good study of that.

Beautifully taken and your use of balance is well explained. I'm not sure about the interruption on the right. I feel that it is more of a distraction than an integral part of the photo.

Like the color contrast between the red fruit and the deep green background. I find the branch tip poking in from the right to be distracting, though curiously it does contribute to the balance.

Your extra info is spot on. Nice shot!

Stunning, the shades and colours are beautiful. The large fruit is balanced by the upper darker area and the smaller eaten fruit and the branches. To me the weight is evenly distributed and done well to have a good asymmetrical balanced image. Well done!

the addition of the smaller plant is the right choice

Love this one. I think it represented the theme well.

I agree wholeheartedly with your technique of trying to imagine the photo with one of the major elements missing. For me that is one of the best ways to decide if the balance in a photo is 'right'. It certainly is here. I also agree that there is a good balance between the colour and texture of the subject and background. Great choice for the challenge.

Beautifully done. IMHO this composition can also be classified as asymmetrical balance with the large fruit in the foreground and the small leaf in the background. In any case a striking image and I high in my favs.
