Google Pixel 4       2nd place, 147 points
1/179s, f2.4, ISO 40, 43mm, ?, ?, flash

Post-Processing: Move subject to the left slightly. Adjust levels, contrast, brightness, white balance. Lighten falling snow. Clone away a couple of blotches.       Extra Info: The outbuildings were slowly disappearing under a heavy snow storm. Taken from inside my truck cab to shield the lens from falling snow. The back roads were deep in snow. Thank goodness for four wheel drive.

Congrats on your 2nd place finish. I think Henriksson would have liked this one (even though it is not high key).
(I've seen signs of him popping in from time to time.)

    ysal - Thank you.
Maike13 - Thanks. I'm pleased it had that effect on you. We'll make a Yeti of you yet! In these conditions it's best to look away from the object and catch it in your peripheral vision. I found this worked for me in the dessert too. It's definitely unsettling when things appear and then vanish.

This was my #1. Very pretty.

Congratulations on your second place. This shot had an odd effect on me. On first viewing I was inclined to like it but thought the outbuildings were too faint. However each time I view it since then, the better defined the outbuildings seem to become. Rather unsettling :-). Anyway, I now think that the shot is fully deserving of your second place and would vote it higher if I had to do it again. Fortunately those extra votes would not have affected the overall result.

Thanks for the votes and comments. I hope it gave some idea of what it's like in a blizzard. Hardly any definition and certainly very little contrast.

Jade - I know whereof you speak. One time I was flying as a co-pilot in a Cessna with floats just north of Montreal when a Herc suddenly emerged out of the white void on our port side. He was at the wrong altitude but who's going to argue with four big turbo props heading right at you. We dumped and dove, waiting to hear some crunching from our tailplane. By the way, jumping in the winter is the only way to go - all that nice heavy air! LOL

Well worth the effort it took to take this shot. Congratulations on 2nd.

Mepo Congrats on being number one second only to the guy that got two of them. That's pretty good. Now you know I can't let your comments go without saying...You think having something appear out of the white void when you can't figure out what it is, how big it is and whether it is moving is disconcerting? Try it when you're flying! : ) (You know when it's right in front of you and not moving just getting bigger you're in serious trouble!) (Among my favourite Gary Larson cartoons...Say, What's a mountain goat doing way up her in a cloud bank...) Actually Arctic training sounds like it could be fun....unless you were in the airborne jumping of course....(Gary Larson cartoon #2....Polar Bear to cub while looking up at the descending troops in parachutes, Now son, in the military they call this a food drop...)

Barely there at all! I can't imagine driving in such conditions.

great picture, the negative space makes this work so well, adding a real sense of isolation and the blizzard itself

I voted #1 for this purely for the theme and loneliness created by the weather. Otherwise the photo is not catchy.

I'm a bit torn by this one. The huge amount of negative space is rather appealing but I feel the positive space (the outbuildings) needs emphasizing just a bit. This could be achieved by making them a touch darker (duplicate layers and linear burn a bit perhaps), or by cropping the right side of the frame so the lower right rule of third point is in the middle of the outbuildings.

Thanks for the comments. Always appreciated.
For those who wanted to get rid of the poles and the small tree. I did try this but the outbuildings seemed to float in the air without these artifacts as a visible anchor to the ground. There is a small copse to the left but it is obscured to the point of being just a smudge. I believe my dislike of things 'floating' is a throwback to my time in the army where we trained for service in the Arctic. Having something appear ahead of you is disconcerting and you search for some kind of reference to know what it is, how big it is, and whether or not it is moving.
The smudges all over the image are made by the large flakes of falling snow that are close to the lens. In this kind of weather you are not looking at a pristine scene from a Xmas card. It's a struggle to keep your camera and your eyes clear of snow. Despite that it's an exhilarating experience. I love the quietness, the solitude and the challenge.

Great shot! I love the simplicity and subtle color. Might prefer to shift the buildings some to the right, losing the last pole and the bush.

It's interesting to see negative space surrounding the subject instead of just acting as a background. Lots of atmosphere here. most of it cold...

Nicely done, love the starkness. Maybe clone or dodge the semi dark area bottom right.

For me this high key image almost works. I think you have to get rid of the hydro poles or frame the structures so they are not dead center. As it is, to me it appears there is something wrong with the placement of the structures in the frame and so long as the poles are there, they should be off to one side or the other (rule of thirds)i.
