Bernie: No, I didn't consider cloning out the band. It doesn't bother me. You'd be surprised how many birds of all types that I see are banded. Brown pelicans were put on the endangered species list in the '70s. Since the banning of DDT and other complementary conservation efforts the populations recovered and they have been removed from the list.

Congrats Steve. (Did you consider cloning out the leg band? just wondering...)

This is a piece of art, your processing is unique and complimentary.

Congratulations on the well deserved double win. I think these are as good as any static bird photos I've ever seen.

Really stunning. Sorry I questioned the background - it's just so unusual. Congratulations on your two fine and well deserved wiins.

Congratulations on winning both categories with birds on posts! One is in the warm glow of sunset, the other in soft moonlight. They are equally stunning.

That's two for Audubon. It is just perfect.

Beautiful shot! It could be an Audubon illustration.

I like the golden hour tones. Great choice for negative space image. Nice sharp capture of the pelican.

Lo and Maike 13: I did not add the background in post processing.

This is an absolutely beautiful image of this pelican, with the sun adding a golden glow to the right. The detail is excellent. The background throws me a bit. I would expect something more natural, so wonder if it was just added during post processing. That being said, it is an attractive foil to the pellican.

Excellent portrait of the pelican with great color in the bird and piling. The unusual background color initially gives me a sense that it was added artificially to complement the coloring of the subject (which it does very well); that leaves me wondering why there's so much of it. Assuming it really is a hazy sky at sunrise/sunset, I wish there were a hint of detail there to confirm this. Minor nit: consider cloning out the leg band. Despite all that, I like the shot a lot.

Suits to the topic, in my favorites. That negative space does not look interesting.

If Audubon did photography, I'm pretty sure it would look just like this. I'm torn about the dead centre placement precisely because it looks like a page out of an Audubon book so in the end I say it's a classic! (I'd have pp'd out the leg band though - unnatural and quite distracting). My top pick - by far. Excellent colour, very good contrast, very good lighting, all natural and good sharpness. The great eye of the pelican makes the shot work. Was this shot at dawn or dusk?

Great pose. I love how sharp the feather details are.

Phil99: Thanks for your comment. I think it's a misconception that the subject needs to be extremely off-center because the theme is about negative space.

Ysal: Appreciate your comment. Negative space isn't about amount. It's about keeping the focus on the subject.

Wow, great shot of the pelican. Probably could have pulled out a bit more for the theme.

Amazing fine detail and a truly wonderful picture. But ... for this challenge - given that the bird is looking to the left - heaps more negative space to the left and hardly any to the right might make this brilliant photo even better.

the pose looks like the bird is stuffed, however the details in the body and eyes make it stand out
