Great Stone Face       ©2009 wrosenthal
Panasonic DMC-FZ18       3rd place, 129 points
1/400s, f6.3, ISO 80, 81mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: The subject was isolated and the background, foreground and surround were blacked out. The subject has increased saturation and contrast.       Extra Info: The Albany, California shoreline includes a small peninsula called the 'bulb' that is the reclaimed city dump. Obviously, it is not entirely reclaimed as there are still large pieces of industrial waste around. Enterprising artists have taken advantage of that over the years, and this is one of the examples of their work. This is the place, by the way, where many of us take our dogs to run free.

Two top five finishes! Great results! Congratulations! (And to explain my comment, I'm always unsure how to treat a photograph of artwork since a photo of a piece of art always has me trying to decide if it is the photograph I'm admiring or the original artist's work.)

Another nice graffiti, remembers a Picasso painting :-) This time I think you did well isolating the subject, that black background goes very well with the yellows.
TT again for you, this time in an even tougher competition, welll done with both entries!!

The simple shape and colour palette make this a very strong image indeed. Love it.

    Great subject for the challenge...
I like the strong contrast and the colours!
Well done!

Love this photo. Great choice of lighting to almost cut the face in half, it adds to the art of the piece. You did well to black out the background. Congratulations.

California's answer to Easter Island :)
Very colorful and well executed.

Great colors and a nice smile. A perfect example how easily a little bit of fantasy can bring even dump to shine. ;-)
It also is a nice link to the smilies which are newly integrated into the forum.

Thanks for the wonderful description. It really brings the photo alive. I think the artist would appreciate the excellent way you have presented his or her art.

I am assuming this is the same area (& photog) as the concrete pipe shot in the main. Pardon me if I am wrong, no offense intended merely a comparison. There I though the PP did not quite work (by a small margin mind). Here I think the isolation does work. I 'know' you have isolated this in PP but yet that thought does NOT intrude here. I never said I was consistent.

I like this. You have taken an existing piece of art and used your skillsgive it a different interpretation. The harsh light has been used very well. TT for me.

Amazing how simple it is to alter some waste into something that makes you smile. Good seen, and good captured.

One of the few subjects that looks great in harsh sunlight. Good job on the background. TT.

Interesting. My top choices were for the same photographer. I had no problem identifying those by the content and style. I did not see it as a dilemma. In any case, thanks and I am happy that you liked them. That's the main point for me, not necessarily 'winning'.

Your Extra info being exactly the same in both Main and Open catagories gives me a personal dilema. I like both shots, but knowing they come from the same photographer makes me feel I need to spread my votes around and skip one of the 2 photos. Had I not read that extra info I would never had guessed they were from the same person and they would both be in my TT. Now... I must ponder the decision. Ahh well, I have no doubt that both shots will do VERY well.

It IS a photo of a piece of art work. Not sure what you mean?

An interesting composition and image nicely isolated. But removed from context, it also looks a little like a photo of a piece of artwork.
