Bill, I'm reeling with shock to find this superb shot in 20th place! Although I struggled endlessly to arrange my favourites, I had no doubts from first setting eyes on this that it would be my #1! The voting in these challenges can be very, very hard to understand!

A few surprises in the results none less than where the votes ranked this one. To me so clearly superior to many other images which ranked ahead of it, and on its technical aspects alone, I feel a better image than my entry. I appreciate the detailed info. but I wonder what Standard High Dynamic translates to in across the board digital photography. Trying to figure what the equiv. would be on an FZ-30 since I almost always lose too much detail in the white feather highlights.

Mighty fine and impressive Great Egret image. Excellent work. High in my favorites.

Reply to Jade before I forget. Happy you liked the shot and, yes, my extraction method needs improvement. Good eye. About the 'Landscape Mode'. The EXIF info is not informative. On the FZ35 it is called Scenery mode and there are many sub settings, one of which is 'High Dynamic'. Even that setting has three sub sets; Standard, Art, B&W. All very confusing, except that I had heard that the Standard High Dynamic setting is helpful in avoiding blown highlights, especial with white subjects. I was experimenting with that setting because I am taking a trip soon where this will be a problem. Going to the Antarctic where there is a lot of white. I think the setting worked well here in fairly bright, direct light. I did darken the background and I think that helped as well.

    Nice capture.
Too much details lost in the feathers. Maybe too much denoising? Or an overexposure corrected in PP?

I try and get close enough to capture a egret and they always fly off before I can get anything close to matching this. Nice Photo.

Egrets make for fine subjects but I do not think I have seen a finer example. Clearly in my top 5. [Edit] I've finalized my picks. This is my no. 4 in a very strong field. Having shot egrets myself, I really do mean this is of superlative quality; I'm intrigued to know whether you deliberately chose landscape mode and if so why. The 1/500 speed worked wonderfully on the whites which can be hard to capture. And your PP work darkening the background is also superb. The only flaw I can readily detect is the spray of feather in the "dark circle" between neck and wing. It looks like you need to use a more rigourous extraction method. I would like to know what technique you did use.
